Failure To Thrive is a description of lower than normal growth. Pediatricians recognize this based on how your child matches up with a standardized growth chart or on decreases in your child’s growth and development movement. If not fixed, Failure To Thrive could impede the child’s normal progress through the developmental steps.

It is possible that the medical practitioner has indicated to you that it is simply a nourishment issue and has told you what to do to improve your child’s overall nourishment. It is possible that you have to modify your child’s diet with guidance from a nutrition expert. It is possible that your medical practitioner prescribed a specific diet for your child. It is possible that these could stop your child’s Failure To Thrive.

It is possible that the medical practitioner has found some precise medical circumstance which is blocking your child’s capability to develop. This could possibly encompass physical problems with the tasks of taking in food and digesting it. It could possibly encompass other medical ailments such as heart or kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, or other situations. These kinds of conditions can also cause Failure To Thrive.

Failure To Thrive & Environmental Factors

A growing number of doctors are beginning to recognize Failure To Thrive as a circumstance related to Sensitivities. In other words, your child is responding to something in the child’s environment and these protective responses are impacting the child’s growth and development.

These sensitivities and intolerances are not like an allergic response. Allergies have a very rapid response which can be as limited as coughing or itchy throat and can be as intense as life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

These sensitivities and intolerances take time and multiple exposures to bring about responses. After continuous exposure to a single factor to which a person reacts, the reaction could be as minor as a little wheeze or light perspiration.

When someone is responding to the stacked effects of many different environmental factors to which they are sensitive or intolerant all stacked together, the defensive responses can become more dramatic. When there are numerous concurrent exposures, this leads to reactions which impact the person’s emotions, health, and even behavior. This could end up as Failure To Thrive.

Sensitivities – Intolerances & Failure To Thrive

In our work, we understand that children and infants with Failure To Thrive are hypersensitive. We find that they have this intolerance and sensitivity to many environmental factors which they eat, breathe, or touch every day (and many times all day, or even all day). With this constant exposure, they stay in a constant state of protective responses.

For instance, we find it common for Failure To Thrive children to be sensitive to the chemical components in the dryer sheets, laundry soaps, air fresheners, or other chemicals used in the household. When a child has these sensitivities and intolerances, they are constantly touching or breathing residue from these chemical products all day, every day. This continual contact maintains them in a constant state of protective responses.

Under this continual impact on their systems, their body needs to shut down non-essential functions to maintain the energy to survive. For many of these hypersensitive children, this means shutting down the circuits which control the developmental process. This is non-essential for survival today, so by shutting that down, the body has more energy for survival, but the developmental process is stopped.
